Motor Vehicle and Safe Driving Act of 2000

The Motor Vehicle and Safe Driving Amendment Act of 2000 (Bill 13-828) was unanimously approved by City Council on December 19, 2000, and by the Mayor on January 22, 2001, to, among other things, transform DMV into a customer friendly organization. The legislation changes several provisions of the District of Columbia Traffic Act of 1925, Title 18 of the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations and other statutes to help reengineer DMV operations and increase the efficiency and fairness of DMV adjudication processes.

The legislation provides for the expeditious enforcement of motor vehicle insurance requirements, the expansion and strengthening of vehicle registration and inspection programs, and simplified and timely enforcement and adjudication of parking and minor moving infractions. The following are the most salient features of the legislation.
